The total number of active duty personnel in the Army is 476,000 soldiers[8] as of October 2017,[9] making it the largest branch of the military in terms of size. soldiers are stationed throughout the world, with over 700 bases in 150 countries.[10][11] The United States Army is ranked as the world’s 3rd largest army by numerical strength,[12][13][14][15] and was ranked 6th in size until September 2017, when China took over that ranking following their announcement to grow their active duty military to 2 million soldiers by 2020.[16][17] The United States Army also maintains a significant global presence, deploying tens of thousands of troops throughout hundreds of countries for training, peacekeeping or other activities under various State Department–led programs such as the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO).[18

The National Guard also falls under the authority of The United States Army during times of national emergency or war, and can be federalized by presidential order to act as an extension of the active duty army.[19] The Army National Guard is divided into units stationed in each of the fifty states, three territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands) and Washington D.C., making it organized territory troops as well as state troops;[20] however unlike most state level National Guard organizations which report to their respective governors (except Alaska),[21] these units instead report to their governors through The Adjutant General Corps which in turn reports to officers appointed by each individual state’s governor but which are jointly responsible for all National Guard units within their states’ borders regardless if they are Air Force, Army or Navy components.[22][23][24]
