The Army’s organizational structure
The Army is divided into several different branches, each with their own uniqueColonel (abbreviated “COL”) is a military rank of a senior commissioned officer. All of the different ranks in the Army are important, but a Colonel is a particularly high-ranking officer. In the Army, there are typically around 2,000 Colonels.
The Army’s chain of command
The Army’s chain of command is the formal structure of authority within the Army. It starts with the President of the United States, who is the head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the Army. Below him is the Secretary of Defense, who is responsible for all military branches including the Army. The Secretary of Defense delegates his authority to the Army’s top civilian leader, the Secretary of the Army. The chain of command then goes from the Secretary of the Army to the Chief of Staff of the Army, and then finally to the Commanding General/Commanding Officer (CG/CO) of an individual army post.
The Army’s ranks
The Army’s ranks are divided into officers and enlisted soldiers. The vast majority of people who join the Army will enter as an enlisted Soldier.
Officers are leaders of the Army. They hold positions of authority and responsibility and are accountable for the actions of their soldiers. Enlisted Soldiers are the backbone of the Army. They perform the day-to-day tasks that keep the Army running.
The Army is divided into three parts:
-the Active Duty Army,
-the Army Reserve, and
-the National Guard.
The Active Duty Army is the full-time force that is always ready to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice. Nearly all Active Duty Soldiers serve in ranks below colonel. The Army Reserve is a part-time force that strengthens the Army during peacetime and provides trained units and personnel to be called upon when needed. The National Guard is also a part-time force, made up of Citizen Soldiers who serve their communities and country both at home and abroad.
The Army’s Colonel ranks
The Colonel rank in the U.S. Army is just below the rank of Brigadier General. A full Colonel is typically in charge of a regiment or brigade. The rank is abbreviated “COL” and is pronounced “kernel”.

The Army’s Colonel ranks are the highest ranks that a Colonel can attain in the Army. The Army’s Colonel ranks are: General of the Army, Field Marshal, Five-Star General, and Colonel. The Army’s Colonel ranks are the only ranks that a Colonel can attain in the Army.
The Army’s Lieutenant Colonel ranks
The Army’s second-highest ranking officer is the lieutenant colonel. A lieutenant colonel typically has at least 15 years of experience and is in charge of a battalion, which is a unit of between 300 and 1,000 soldiers. There are currently around 4,000 lieutenant colonels in the Army.

The Army’s Colonel pay grade is a direct commission officer. A Colonel in the Army is typically in charge of a brigade or regiment. There are a few different types of Colonels: full, lieutenant, and assistant. The pay grade for a Colonel is O-6.

As of 2018, there were approximately 1,280 active-duty Colonels in the Army. In addition to base pay, Colonels may receive allowances for housing and food, as well as special incentive pay for serving in hazardous duty or deployed locations.

-Year one: $5,472.60 per month
-Year two: $5,705.70 per month
-Year three: $6,021.00 per month
-Year four: $8,241.20 per month
-Year five: $8,854.80 per month
The Army’s Lieutenant Colonel pay grade
